ONUG Great Discussion and Town Hall Meeting to Assess the Necessary Adaptations for the Digital Transformation

ONUG Spring Sessions Discuss Changing Network Engineer Skill Sets and New Vendor/Buyer Roles in the Cloud and Open Source Age

March 16, 2017 Boston – The Open Networking User Group (ONUG) today announced the topics and speakers for its two highly regarded forums, the Great Discussion and Town Hall Meeting, scheduled to take place at ONUG Spring 2017, hosted by Gap Inc. at the Mission Bay Conference Center in San Francisco, California on April 25th and 26th.

The Great Discussion is scheduled to take place on April 25th, where Truman Boyes, CTO Office Head of Networks at Bloomberg, will engage with Vijay Gill, SVP of Software Engineering at Salesforce, in this popular ONUG exchange, as they discuss whether network engineers need to understand programming. Gill will argue that infrastructure engineers will need to know how to code infrastructure using a wide range of APIs, orchestration tools, programs and programming languages. Boyes, on the other hand, will argue that much of the need to code infrastructure is hype. He will reason that existing skill sets have a long shelf life thanks to advances in orchestration software and APIs provided by infrastructure suppliers to configure devices via security policy. Tom Hollingsworth, CCIE, network engineer, and organizer at Tech Field Day, will moderate the Great Discussion.

Like the Great Discussion, the Town Hall Meeting actively engages the ONUG Community by providing a venue for candid discussions between vendors and IT business leaders, as speakers directly address questions from the audience. This spring’s panel will focus on the new vendor and buyer roles in the age of cloud services and open source software. Rachael King from the Wall Street Journal will moderate the session on April 26th, which will include participation from the following industry leaders:

  • – Najam Ahmad, VP of Network Engineering, Facebook
  • – Chalan Aras, VP and GM, Citrix
  • – Adrian Cockcroft, VP of Cloud Architecture Strategy, Amazon
  • – Dave Ward, CTO of Engineering and Chief Architect, Cisco
  • – Dominic Wilde, VP and GM, HPE

Register for ONUG Spring 2017 to engage with ONUG business leaders.
